I wound up being Philip Jose Farmer, spent a few minutes switching answers that could have gone either way and came up with Heinlein and Hal Clement...

I would have expected someone I read more often...(ok...Heinlein fits that but mainly the stuff like "have space suit will travel") I have trouble reading Clements stuff, and I find Farmer's stuff too wordy.
